Days with No Name

Last weekend I was whisked away to a seaside village by my husband who knew I had not had a day off since February. He thought feeling wind blow through my ears might just perk me up. My first thought was it was time to drop my Janome machine off for a yearly servicing with a dealer 3 hours up the freeway.

I left a message on my answerphone that the sewing room was closed for 4 days and just looked forward to walking on the shore and doing nothing that involved a sewing machine or clients. Rain was predicted but weather is no reason to postpone or initiate a trip in the Northwest…you just throw in shorts, jeans, walking shoes and a waterproof jacket to be prepared for highs and lows and downpours in the fall.

A nearby colony of artists was one day’s destination which included a lunch in a time warped 50’s diner and walking the shore to collect shells:

There were so many fishing type scenes too. For an $11 3-day permit one can throw a crab basket filled with a fish head for bait just off the walkways and pull up crab. Of course these are Pacific crab that must be 5 3/4 inches wide and only males to qualify for keeping and cooking.

Tuna boats provide fresh fish along with men who will cut up your freshly caught salmon from the nearby river.

and while all this seems idyllic there is always this sign along the coast warning of danger:

But in the interest of safety the harbor provides these for all children walking around the wooden harbor walkways: While children run instead of walking and spend their time searching for the ever present harbor seals begging for fish scraps from the boats they can fall into the water very easily. Many small boys were grabbed by the scruff of their neck before they took a dip in the water off the edge of the pier by accident!

Now back in my sewing room it seems a long time since my escape of relaxation and fresh air because the bridal season has not subsided…oh no…just this week I have seen 2 brides and more to follow. Come on people…Oct is no month to have an outdoor wedding here!

Just hoping that we do not have a repeat of last year’s 10-10-10 episode!!! I’m keeping my fingers crossed we don’t have an explosion of 11-11-11 weddings! Who knows?

Isn’t that the number that gamblers hate to see on the rolled dice? Isn’t is called “snake eyes“? It has to be a real bad luck day for a wedding date for sure.

Better get back to the collection of Fall clothes and holiday outfits from the local wealthy doyennes yearning/determined to make a statement/outshine all their peers at the upcoming soirees of the season.

Wishing you a peaceful week watching the beginning of the falling leaf season.
